Life of a film- Research task

1. Recap-

  • Production - Production is the creation of a media product, it also done in three stages:
  1. Pre-production - This is where everything is prepared, for example: funding, the cast, the loaction, the rights etc.
  2. Production - This is where everything is recorded.
  3. Post-Production - This is where the film is edited and put together and sent over to distributors and exhibitors in order to get a profit out of the funding.
  • Subsidiary - A subsidiary company is a company that is either controlled partially or fully. The name for the company that is controlling is called a parent company.
  • Distribution - For the distribution, movies are sold to either a distributor in order to make DVDs for home cinema purposes or exhibitors so that people pay to see at the cinema .
  • Marketing - This is not only part of the distribution, but it is to obtain the interest of the public and to do this you need to make press packs, banners, posters, trailers etc.
  • Exhibition- This is how the media product is presented, for example HD, 3D, blue-ray, cinema etc.
  • Horizontal Intergration - When a parent company owns multiple companies at the same stage of a film industry. It is a strategy used by a business or corporation that seeks to sell a type of product in numerous markets.
  • Vertical Intergration - When a parent company owns multiple companies across different stages of the film industry. Vertically integrated companies in a supply chain are united through a common owner.

Warp Films: Four Lions

Brief Synopsis: Four Lions tells the story of a group of British jihadists who push their abstract dreams of glory to the breaking point. As the wheels fly off, and their competing ideologies clash, what emerges is an emotionally engaging (and entirely plausible) farce. In a storm of razor-sharp verbal jousting and large-scale set pieces, Four Lions is a comic tour de force; it shows that-while terrorism is about ideology-it can also be about idiots.

Film poster analysis

Title: The title is "Scott Pilgrim VS. The World". It is the name of a comic, so already it would interest those who love reading action packed comics. The sense of one person (Scott Pilgrim) versing "the world" gives a sense of super natural, which would bring people who like that kind of thing.

Foreground: there is the title and the main characters in the front to emphasis how important they are in the movie. The lead character is also standing in front of the girl behind him to suggest that he is protecting her. There is also a white fog/ mist, which adds a sense of mystery- like the main character doesn't actually know what he is up against when trying to protect the girl.

Background: there are 7 snippets of characters that appear to have super powers, the one in the middle looks as if he is the boss of them all.

Font & text: the font is rather comic like which reflects the kind of genre this movie is. In the border the text reveals the story line of the movie/ what the main character has to do through-out the movie. It also says the director also made similar films which would make the audience/ or people that were fans of the last few films to engage more people to watch the movie.

Border: The border emphasizes the appearance of the video game or a tv/ gameboy screen, so it can lure more teenage "nerds" to watch this movie.

Characters: the characters have specific looks to them, for example: the main character is wearing an iconic guitar top which suggests he plays guitar and is in a band, his wrist bands suggest that he thinks it is fashionable which shows that he is interested in more classic punk rock music/ fashion/  lifestyle. The girl for example looks like she is interested in the same type of fashion, she has an iconic star bag which makes her appear as if she is like a cartoon character. She also has a sense of unreal qualities about her which is maybe by the lead character is so interested in her, to go to the extent to protect her. The 'boss' bad guy looks a bit like a business man with his strict and severe suit and smart glasses, he looks as if he is invincible and smart enough not to get tricked.
